Rite Aid has announced more store closures after reportedly agreeing to sell pharmacy assets from over 1,000 locations to various competitors.
In the midst of Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, the drugstore chain said it would close 115 of its stores but a newly published document shows that 27 additional stores are following suit.
In an initial filing in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey, the company indicated just 47 stores were set to close before adding more to the list a few days later. As of May 16, a total of 142 closures are expected to shutter, or over 10% of the total 1,240 locations.
Earlier this month, Rite-Aid said it was “working to facilitate a smooth transfer of customer prescriptions to other pharmacies” during the bankruptcy process.
The closures come as the company sells assets like prescription files and other goods to other retails including CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens, Kroger and Albertsons, according to Reuters. The transactions will not impact non-closing stores, where customers can continue to use pharmacy services.

Pennsylvania has the most locations slated to close, with 69 stores set to shutter.
The company listed 25 locations in California, 14 in Oregon, three in Maryland and one in Delaware as being set to close. Store closures also are set for Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Virginia and Washington.
